What’s more is that oil change techs don’t get the same amount of training that they used to and they aren’t paid well, so you can imagine how much (or little) they really know or care about their job.  If you’ve found yourself having to go to a quickie lube for whatever reason, you may have noticed that the person taking care of your engine isn’t even a real mechanic.  Yes the franchises have a process, a system, so they can hire the lowest possible talent to change your oil and do an ok job but these are not the same professionals we used to trust our vehicles to.  It’s too bad that oil change technicians aren’t as good at your engine maintenance as they are at selling you windshield wipers or an air filter.  

So there’s the plain truth…the reason I still change my own motor oil. 

Have you heard of engine flushing?  It’s something a lot of people have never heard of.  Here’s why it is important to learn about.  In an ideal world the insides of our engines would stay perfectly clean allowing the lubricating oil film on the cylinder walls, on the valve train, in the bearings etc to perform perfectly.  The reality is the insides of our engine are under constant attack from dust, debris, sludge and metallic particulate from engine produced from normal engine wear.  To get a good idea of the destruction that can be done from high velocity grit and dust in the air, imagine doing some serious sandblasting (I suggest you have a really good air filter).

Another problem is that the environment inside today’s engines makes oil prone to turn to varnish and sludge as time goes on.  Depending on the engine and the amount of time, the sludge and varnish can build up so much that oil flow becomes restricted and hot spots develop in your engine.  Restricted oil flow can result in excessive wear and component failure inside the engine.  Hot spots are no good as they rob your engine of its performance and cause even more oil breakdown.

To counteract the hot spot problem and get rid of all that varnish, sludge and particulate that’s accumulated (causing your engine to lose performance and unnecessary wear) you can run an engine flush through your engine.  It’s kind of like turpentine, introducing a strong solvent to a hot engine.  The sludgy deposits dissolve as the solvent circulates through the engine with the oil.

How you do it depends on the product you use.  The method I employ, which is fairly common, is a 20 minute engine flush and I perform that directly before I change my oil.  I add 12 fl oz of solution to the engine while it is hot (but not running).  I restart the engine and allow it to idle for 20 minutes.  It is super important to leave your engine idling and don’t drive while you’re flushing it. The lubricating properties of the motor oil are not as good when the solvent is present and you do not want to cause engine damage.

When 20 minutes are up I shut the engine off and drain the oil, just like a normal oil change, and I use AMSOIL 5W-30 full synthetic to fill’er up again.  My engines stay clean this way.

When you keep the sludge and varnish at bay your engine will reap some major benefits; your valves will operate and seal like they’re supposed to, piston rings will be floating properly to minimize blow be, and your engine will ultimately run cooler.  All this keeps your engine pumping out the most horsepower at the best fuel economy.

If you want more horsepower and fuel economy then just change your oil.  Different oils are going to give you different kinds of engine performance, for a number of reasons.  You have to be careful that you don’t damage your engine with the wrong oil type.

When you know that a 5W 30 viscosity rating means the motor oil viscosity falls into a specific range then you could see that maybe some oil companies place the viscosity at the lower end of the range making the oil as light as it can be and still be called 5w 30.  Sounds pretty devious.

So here’s where I have to chime in with a question.  Who in the world would ever consider running an engine for any period of time with no oil at all to be more beneficial in contrast to getting that last drop of motor oil to drain?

And furthermore, how in the heck did he get away with this for decades and never had engine failure?  Well, oil leaves a film on all the engine parts and that fine film doesn’t drain out when you’re draining the oil.  There is still some protection there even if the sump is empty.

If anyone out there’s nervous about dry engine starts, they can just call good ole uncle Bob and he’ll let you know if there’s something to be worried about.

I had to ask my buddy if uncle Bob used to run his V8 Cuda dry to get out all the oil and was answered with a big fat NO…and I don’t have to ask why (ha ha).  I guess a dual port air cooled 1600 CC VW engine is not as much a risk his V8…
